6512 руб"Between Worlds": Deaf Women, Work, and Intersections of Gender and Ability (New Approaches in Sociology)
Cheryl G. Najarian The purpose of this book is to illustrate the struggles of Deaf women as they negotiate their family, educational, and work lives. This study demonstrates how these women resist and overcome the various obstacles that are put before them as well as how they work to negotiate their identities as Deaf women in the Deaf community, hearing world, and the places "in between." The scope of the book traces these women's lives in these three major sectors of their lives and provides a discussion of the implications for other linguistic minorities.

2854 рубA Dance with Death: Soviet Airwomen in World War II
Anne Noggle The world's first women combat pilots were members of the Soviet Army Air Force, flying fighters and bomber aircraft against the Luftwaffe. Thirty women flyers were named the Hero of the Soviet Union, one of that nation's highest honors. During three extended visits to Moscow during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Anne Noggle interviewed and photographed more than seventy of these veteran pilots. Freed by glasnost to speak openly of their experiences, they tell in their own words of flying flimsy aircraft, fighting distrust from male pilots and officers, and taking to the air for as many as a thousand nights during the war. The women who tell their stories here began the war mostly as inexperienced girls - many of them teenagers. In support of their homeland, they volunteered to serve as bomber and fighter pilots, navigator-bombardiers, gunners, and support crews. They saw many of their friends - as well as many of their foes - fall to earth in flames. ...

1517 рубAll the Available Light: A Marilyn Monroe Reader
Yona Zeldis McDonough Forty years after her death, one would think that enough had been written about Marilyn Monroe to satisfy even the most avid fan. Yet here is another book that looks at the legacy of this icon. McDonough, author of a forthcoming novel (The Four Temperaments) and, ironically, a tribute to the Barbie doll, has gathered together 17 essays by authors past and present who muse on Marilyn as cultural icon, sex goddess, victim, and actress. Joyce Carol Oates ("Centerfold") and Gloria Steinem ("The Woman Who Will Not Die") share these pages with Sir Laurence Olivier ("The Prince and the Showgirl") and Clare Booth Luce ("The Love Goddess Who Never Found Love"). Some of these pieces were previously published, some were excerpted from longer works, and some were written for this collection. At times, it is difficult to tell which have been previously published and where; McDonough would have done well to list this information along with the piece itself instead of in the introductions to each...

Deborah G. Douglas, Amy E. Foster, Alan D. Meyer, Lucy B. Young The words "Women Fly" are stitched on one of the hottest ball caps at air shows around the country. Women also run wind tunnel experiments, direct air traffic, and fabricate airplanes. American women have been involved with flight from the beginning, but until 1940, most people believed women could not fly, that Amelia Earhart was an exception to the rule. World War II changed everything. "It is on the record that women can fly as well as men," stated General Henry H. Arnold, commanding general of the Army Air Forces. The question became "Should women fly?" American Women and Flight since 1940 tells the story of this ongoing debate and its impact on American history. From Jackie Cochran, whose perseverance led to the formation of the Women?s Army Service Pilots (WASP) during World War II to the recent achievements of Jeannie Flynn, the Air Force?s first woman fighter pilot and Eileen Collins, NASA?s first woman shuttle commander, Deborah G. Douglas introduces a host of determined...

Heba Handoussa The subject of women's participation in economic activity in the MENA region has acquired particular importance in view of the pressures of globalization, trade liberalization, the need for more women entrepreneurs, and a stronger presence in regional non-government organizations, as well as labor market and fiscal hurdles as they affect women. This volume highlights the frequent and visible discrimination against women as essential actors in the development process, and discusses means by which traditional and conservative constraints to their increased participation in social, political, and productive life can be overcome. The six studies in this volume reflect the views of diverse regional experts and several international organizations, brought together at a seminar held in Kuwait under the auspices of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Arab Monetary Fund. They cover key aspects of the problematic and are presented together with a review...

Holly Devor "The book alternates specialized academic analysis with the individual studies, and should be of interest to both professionals who work with transsexuals and scholars interested in gender theory." - Choice "Writing with an intelligent and accessible style, Dr. Devor balances exposition, analysis, and excerpts from her subjects' interviews to present a coherent picture of what social life is like for FTMs as they find their identity and learn about themselves." - Jamison "James" Green The author of the groundbreaking book Gender Blending here turns her attention to the little-known world of female-to-male transsexuals. Who are they? How do they come to know themselves as transsexual? What do they do about it? How do their families cope? Who loves them? What does it mean for the rest of us?

590 рубHelene Cixous: Live Theory
Ian Blyth, Susan Sellers "Helene Cixous: Live Theory" provides a clear and informative introduction to one of the most important and influential European writers working today. The book opens with an overview of the key features of Cixous's theory of ecriture feminine (feminine writing). The various manifestations of ecriture feminine are then explored in chapters on Cixous's fictional and theatrical writing, her philosophical essays, and her intensely personal approach to literary criticism. The book concludes with a new, lively and wide-ranging interview with Helene Cixous in which she discusses her influences and inspirations, and her thoughts on the nature of writing and the need for an ethical relationship with the world. Also offering a survey of the many English translations of Cixous's work, this book is an indispensable introduction to her work for students of Literature, Philosophy, Cultural and Gender Studies. Which means Gerti - his wife and property. Gerti is not asked how she feels about the use Hermann puts her to. She is a receptacle into which Hermann pours his juices, nastily, briefly, brutally. The long-suffering and battered Gerti thinks she has found her saviour and love in Michael, a student who rescues her after a day of vigorous use by her husband.
