1400 рубBasketball: Its Origin and Development
James Naismith James Naismith was teaching physical education at the Young Men’s Christian Association Training College in Springfield, Massachusetts, and felt discouraged because calisthenics and gymnastics didn’t engage his students. What was needed was an indoor wintertime game that combined recreation and competition. One evening he worked out the fundamentals of a game that would quickly catch on. Two peach half-bushel baskets gave the name to the brand new sport in late 1891. "Basketball: Its Origin and Development" was written by the inventor himself, who was inspired purely by the joy of play. Naismith, born in northern Ontario in 1861, gave up the ministry to preach clean living through sport. He describes Duck on the Rock, a game from his Canadian childhood, the creative reasoning behind his basket game, the eventual refinement of rules and development of equipment, the spread of amateur and professional teams throughout the world, and the growth of women’s basketball (at first...

Keith Thompson Upon its establishment in 1946 the NBA – via its forerunner the Basketball Association of America – became the 21st professional basketball league to be formed in the U.S., and the one that would outlast all the others. In addition, since 1896 when professional basketball began in Trenton, New Jersey thousands of players have competed in a pro game, and generated countless hours of debate as to who the best players are in the history of the sport. In fact, precisely 3572 players and 439 All-stars have graced the courts of the NBA and the American Basketball Association when it was in operation between 1967 and 1976. And until now there has never been a truly scientific method of evaluating their performances on a basketball court, and determining who is the all-time best. Finally, after 109 years, such a measure has been created. This book, Heroes of the Hardcourt: Ranking Pro Basketball’s 100 Greatest Players identifies and profiles the 100 greatest players to play...

Alan Ross No team in NBA history has won more consistently throughout the league's fifty-seven-year history than the Los Angeles Lakers, nee Minneapolis Lakers. Though they trail the Boston Celtics in overall pro basketball championships, sixteen to fifteen—the Lakers won two pre-NBA titles in addition to their thirteen NBA crowns—the Lakers reigned through four different epochs: the George Mikan years (six titles), the Wilt Chamberlain-Jerry West era (one crown), the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar-Magic Johnson-James Worthy teams (five championships), and the more recent Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O'Neal dynasty (three consecutive titles) at the turn of the century. Their star power is second to none. The list of big-name Lakers reads like a who's who of hoopdom: Mikan, MIkkelsen, Lovellette, Baylor, West, Chamberlain, Goodrich, Abdul-Jabbar, Johnson, Worthy, Wilkes, O'Neal, and Bryant. And don't forget the great coaches: John Kundla, Bill Sharman, Pat Riley, and Phil Jackson. Lakers Glory...

Glenn Stout, Stephanie Peters Michael Jordan electrified the basketball world from the moment he burst onto the scene in the early 1980s. His grace under pressure, his seeming ability to defy gravity, his pure love of the game - all were unparalleled. When he retired, he left a gaping hole that many have tried to fill. And while some have come close, none may ever jump as high into the basketball stratosphere as His Airness once did. Matt Christopher is the name young readers turn to when they're looking for the best sports biographies on the shelf.

2144 рубThe First Tip-Off: The Incredible Story of the Birth of the NBA
Charley Rosen Return to basketball's salad days, when the boys were green and the money didn't matter. On November 1, 1946, in the NBA's (then called the BAA) first game ever, as the visiting New York Knickerbockers defeated the Toronto Huskies, the first point in the history of the NBA was scored by the Knicks' Oscar “Ossie” Schectman. It was the point that launched more than six million points to come, and Ossie did it, like all of his team members, for a mere $60 and a passionate love of the game. Who could have guessed back then that this fledgling league of 11 ragtag teams would one day grow into the billion-dollar international phenomenon that it is today? In The First Tip-Off, veteran basketball writer Charley Rosen takes you back to the NBA's humble beginnings, when a colorful cast of characters laid the foundation for the empire that is today's NBA. With riveting writing, he gives you a prime seat courtside for every memorable two-handed underhand layup and hook shot of...

Sam Smith Fred Barnes (The McLaughlin Group) The American Spectator A riveting account... what you want in a sports book: the behind-the-scenes stuff, a peek at the private side of the players, their hobbies and politics and religion, the way they get along or don't... It's fair to compare The Jordan Rules with the campaign books that appear after every presidential race... The difference is not only that The Jordan Rules explains more persuasively than most of the campaign chronicles how the winner was decided - it's that it does so more interestingly and with more understanding of the human heart.
