The brilliant Kazimir Malevich was a pioneer of twentieth-century art, the founder of a radical form of abstraction known as Suprematism and a major figure in the Russian avant-garde, who was also instrumental in promoting the radical styles that led to Cubism. Between 1912 and 1915, he showed his work in Futurist exhibitions, encouraging that movement's most abstract tendencies. At the same time, Malevich worked closely with the Futurist poets in their experiments with Zaum, a theoretical language that rejected all attempts at logical expression. Having absorbed the ideals of Zaum, Malevich's visual experiments moved to an extreme of abstraction with his famous Black Square of 1915. This renowned work, which the artist called "a totally bare icon without a frame," a pure quadrilateral form reduced to its most elementary components, signaled the beginning of Malevich's strictly geometric style of Suprematism. After 1918, Malevich gave up painting altogether, and turned to...

Gerry Souter Kazimir Malevich was a painter and a great art theorist but first and foremost he was the founder of Suprematism (pure abstraction), a style based on geometrical forms. "Suprematism," he wrote, "has led me to discover something that had not been understood until then??? there is in human consciousness an imperious desire of space and the will to escape from Earth." This new publication presents the brilliant works of Malevich, the original painter, who until the age of twentyseven had no professional background as a painter, and who learned to draw out of curiosity and out of his will to learn. Gerry Souter once more offers us the works of a brilliant artist as well as a new perspective on the artist's personality.

AndrA?A©i Nakov An iconic figure in the history of modern art, the Russian painter Kazimir Malevich (1879-1935) was the creator of Suprematism, best known for his emblematic Black Square (1915). Censored in Russia for many years, his revolutionary writings were only recognised at the end of the twentieth century, initially in Western Europe. Similarly, much of his work remained unknown until the fall of Communism; little studied, the life and work of this painter remain shrouded in an aura of mystery. Andrei Nakov's monumental 4-volume study of this prophetic artist is founded on many decades of research in Russia, Western Europe and the US. The author has uncovered many previously unknown documents, and sheds a new light on Malevich's pivotal role in the development of modern art, offering a radically new interpretation of a fascinating artist. Volume 1: Impressionism and Symbolism are the starting points of the Polish-born Russian painter Kazimir Malevich's avant-garde trajectory. The artist's...

Barbara Rose The first comprehensive study of the modern history of monochrome art, Monochromes traces the development of single-color artwork--painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installations--up to the present. With almost 160 full-color reproductions, this stunning book examines fundamental aesthetic issues raised by the monochrome in a historical context. The authors ask whether the monochrome is the last and most radical phase of abstract painting or instead a point of departure for installations and environments. Among the many artists featured in this book are Alexander Rodchenko, Georgia O'Keeffe, Lucio Fontana, Yves Klein, Ad Reinhardt, Frank Stella, Andy Warhol, Robert Irwin, and Isamu Noguchi. The book includes writings on the monochrome by twenty-six artists, from Kasimir Malevich to Warhol, and from Carl Andre, Reinhardt, and Donald Judd to Ben Nicholson, Robert Ryman, and Anish Kapoor. In an engaging essay, Barbara Rose deftly surveys the divergent complex issues...
