2141 рубA Group of Noble Dames
Thomas Hardy Thomas Hardy pays tribute to the triumphs and tribulations of patrician Englishwomen in his collection of short stories, A Group of Noble Dames. Around the fire at an inn, sheltering from a storm, the members of the Wessex Field and Antiquarian Club are each entreated to tell a story. The men all tell tales of women, the 'Noble Dames' of the title, from the Countess of Wessex to the Duchess of Hamptonshire. The lives of these fictional dames are imagined by Hardy based on clues from real-life genealogies and archival family records. Inventive and detailed, these stories confirm why Hardy is one of the most enduring and best-loved writers of the 19th Century.

90 рубFar From the Madding Crowd
Thomas Hardy "Far from the Madding Crowd" is perhaps the most pastoral of Hardy's Wessex novels. It tells the story of the young farmer Gabriel Oak and his love for and pursuit of the elusive Bathsheba Everdene, whose wayward nature leads her to both tragedy and true love. It tells of the dashing Sergeant Troy whose rakish philosophy of life was "...the past was yesterday; the future, tomorrow; never, the day after". And lastly, of the introverted and reclusive gentleman farmer, Mr.Boldwood, whose love fills him with "...a fearful sense of exposure", when he first sets eyes on Bathsheba. The background to this compelling story is the majesty of the Wessex countryside in-all its moods, contriving to make it one of the most English great English novels.

74 рубFar from the Madding Crowd
Thomas Hardy Bathsheba Everdene is the proud, capricious and handsome heroine of "Far from the Madding Crowd". Thomas Hardy's richly evocative novel opens with the arrival of Bathsheba in the village of Weatherbury to work the large, dilapidated farm that is her inheritance. The plot turns on her sentimental education, her infatuation for Sergeant Troy, a dazzling young cavalry officer, and her relationship with the shepherd-farmer, Gabriel Oak. Gabriel's strong presence permeates a drama of temptation, treachery and passion in which Bathsheba achieves a painful but necessary self-knowledge. Although Hardy's familiar themes of betrayal and the pain of love are present in this novel, it is also one of the warmest, most humorous of Hardy's works. Referred to by Ronald Blythe as 'all morning brightness, inspiration and possibility', it is, understandably, the novel that first earned Hardy his reputation as one of our finest chroniclers of human life and love.

Thomas Hardy Beautiful, impulsive and spirited, Bathsheba Everdene's fortunes are changed forever when she inherits her own farm and becomes a woman of independent means. Set in Hardy's evocative Wessex countryside, Bathsheba is pursued by three very different suitors. The reliable and humble Gabriel Oak, the vain and impetuous Troy and the reserved yet determined Boldwood. With the morals of rural society weighing heavily upon her, it is through these relationships that Bathsheba experiences the torture of unrequited love and betrayal and discovers how random acts of chance and tragedy can alter the pathway of a life dramatically.

Thomas Hardy Jude Fawley is a rural stonemason with intellectual aspirations. Frustrated by poverty and the indifference of the academic institutions at the University of Christminster, his only chance of fulfilment seems to lie in his relationship with his unconventional, free-thinking cousin, Sue Bridehead. But life as social outcasts proves undermining, and when tragedy occurs, Sue has no resilience and Jude is left in despair. Hardy's portrait of Jude, the idealist and dreamer who is a prisoner of his own physical nature, is one of the most haunting and desperate of his creations. Jude the Obscure is a dark yet compassionate account of the insurmountable frustrations of human existence which reflect Hardy's yearning for the spiritual values of the past and his despair at their decline. Формат: 12,5 см х 19,5 см.

Thomas Hardy Jude Fawley, a stone-mason, has already suffered. His academic ambitions were thwarted by his poverty and class: trapped into a loveless marriage, he is now alone but not free. He comes to love his cousin Sue who, seemingly emancipated, is herself miserably married. Sue's words to Jude are prophetic, for although together they defy conventional morality to seize a chance of happiness, they are ultimately defeated by both circumstance and the flaws within their own nature.

795 рубJude the Obscure (Oxford World's Classic)
Thomas Hardy Hardy's last and most controversial novel, Jude the Obscure caused much outrage when it was published in 1895. Jude Fawley, poor and working-class, longs to study at the University of Christminster, but his ambitions to go to university are thwarted by class prejudice and his entrapment in a loveless marriage. He falls in love with his unconventional cousin, Sue Bridehead, and their refusal to marry when free to do so confirms their rejection of and by the world around them. The shocking fate that overtakes them is an indictment of a rigid and uncaring society. This is the first truly critical edition, taking account of the changes that Hardy made over twenty-five years. Hardy's last, and most controversial novel, this revised edition has the first truly critical text, a new chronology and bibliography, and substantially revised notes.
