Ольга Костюк The present art book features the Hermitage Museum collection of European and Russian jewellery dating from the 16th to early 20th centuries. All in all, it covers one hundred objects selected from the many thousands made of precious metals and stones and housed in the Hermitage nowadays. The core of the Hermitage collection was formed by the Imperial Treasure Gallery which would hold pieces of jewellery fashioned by the very best European artists and craftsmen. Some of them were produced on commissions of the Imperial family members, others donated as diplomatic gifts. The gallery used to have not only most expensive objects but also most valuable and rare ones from the artistic point of view. Ю. Я. Зек, Ю. Н. Семенов, М. П. Гурьев Среди редкостей, хранящихся в Эрмитаже, выделяется своей необычностью большой автомат XVIII века с фигурами птиц и часами. Эта вещь, занимающая центральное место в одном из красивейших залов музея, принадлежит к числу самых загадочных экспонатов, чье происхождение овеяно легендой... В этом птичьем вольере далеко не сразу обнаруживается циферблат, спрятанный в шляпке большого гриба, "выросшего" под дубом; в прорези шляпки видны римские и арабские цифры, обозначающие соответственно часы и минуты, выгравированные на двух вращающихся кольцах. Часовой механизм скрыт внутри серебряного холма, обрамленного крупными гранеными стразами и валиком зеленого "трельяжа". Стразы помещены на рубинового цвета фольге и оправлены в "каменный" пояс из золоченой бронзы. Часы присутствуют здесь на втором плане, в качестве регистратора времени; главное же место занимают птицы, олицетворяющие ход Времени. Формат: 17 см х 24,5 см.
